Confession time: As a new mummy holding down a full-time job, I'm finding it harder to keep my belly fat under control! Like many working mums my current exercise program basically consists of jumping in and out of the car as I drive to the office and day care… Yes I know, I’m aware this probably (definitely) isn’t the best exercise program out there.
My lack of spare time has unfortunately led me down the path of trying dozens of crazy diets. After experimenting with every diet under the sun I realised that the dieting approach (a.k.a starving approach) was not a realistic way to lose weight.
Yep, I learnt the hard way...
After finishing each crazy diet I'd lose a bit of weight, but then I'd end up putting the weight back on. After lots of trial-and-error and a bunch of research, I was able to find a more effective approach that has finally allowed me to lose weight and keep it off.
It focuses on boosting the metabolism instead of restricting food intake. A fast metabolism means that your body converts food to energy quickly. Speeding up your metabolism is also the mechanism that allows you to burn stubborn fat around your belly.
After so many attempts at trying to lose weight and keep it off, I've finally realised that it's actually not that hard and you don't need to diet. For the last 3 weeks I've been following these 5 simple tips to boost my metabolism and I've been getting awesome results. I’ve been been able to lose about 2kg per week and counting. Enjoy!
1. Don’t diet
Let me set something straight: diets that involve calorie restriction simply don’t work. Dieting sends a signal to your body that says “I’m starving here!” and your body responds by slowing your metabolism down to hold onto existing energy stores. When your body is in a state of starvation (a.k.a dieting) it burns fat reeaaally slowly. Not good!
2. Eat more frequently
This may sound contradictory but bare with me. The feeling you get when you’re hungry is caused by a drop in blood sugar, which causes your metabolism to slow down.
Eating frequently stabilises blood sugar levels and allows you to maintain a high metabolic rate. Get into the habit of eating every 3 - 4 hours or at least 4 times a day.
3. Snack on watermelon & almonds
This may sound like a weird combination but these 2 foods are the ultimate hunger fighters.
Watermelons are low-calorie fruits that are packed with essential vitamins including vitamin C and A.
Almonds are packed with hunger-fighting protein and essential minerals including magnesium and potassium.
When combining these 2 foods at regular intervals, you'll feel fuller for longer and your metabolism will remain steady.
4. Stay hydrated
Many of us don’t drink nearly enough water which results in our bodies mistaking hunger for thirst.
Drinking water throughout the day not only reduces the chance of your body mistaking hunger for thirst, but it also boosts the metabolism.
A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that drinking water (about 17oz) increases metabolic rate by 30 percent. Keep sippin’ that water!
5. Drink Stay Lean Tea
